Iain Mansfield on demands from a civil servant union to move to a four day week
Public Sector Productivity: A Four Day Week?
Director of Research Iain Mansfield appeared on Radio 5’s Stephen Nolan show to discuss demands from a civil servant union to move to a four day week - on full pay. He argued that with public sector productivity still lagging well below pre-pandemic levels, this was unlikely to improve matters - and that the taxpayer should not foot the bill for speculative experiments of this nature. If civil servants really could do as much in four days as in five - which was doubtful - then this pointed to a wider culture of weak performance management in the public sector; the priority should be to drive up productivity across the board, not to bake-in lower...

Just to remind our dear US “Republican” friends that way more British and other NATO forces have died in Afghanistan (there due to the US invoking Article 5) than Americans in Europe from 1946 onwards. Almost heart breaking now to remember the good old times when the US had (Republican and Democratic) presidents with a solid understanding of geopolitics and deterrence (just watch interviews of Richard Nixon or any other Cold War-Era US presidents to understand why in Europe and the US we don’t all just speak Russian)

Well done for a potential future national security advisor: complete failure to understand the difference between force allocation in an active conflict and need to ensure deterrence (ie to prevent a war from starting)

The UK just needs to learn to accept that it doesn't matter how Europhilic your elites are, Europe is simply not the most important part of the world anymore. Asia is. If you want the United States to focus more on your region, you will have to work to weaken the peer rival to the United States, which is China, or strengthen its the balancing coalition against it: states such as the US, Japan, India. Short of that, you are going to have to learn how to defend yourself. Because no one else can afford to save you at their own expense.

Why was the USA so successful during the Cold War? It implemented the Marshall Plan to economically strengthen its partners in Europe. The USA was the largest economy and opened its market to the products of its allies. The USA offered its allies a security umbrella with nuclear deterrence through NATO. As a result, America managed to push back the influence of the Soviet Union on Europe and ultimately win the Cold War. The alliance between Western Europe and the USA is proving difficult today. For example, Germany follows a mercantilist economic model and is therefore dependent on cheap energy and large growth markets. Russia and China can provide both of these for Western Europe like no other country. The USA, on the other hand, is becoming increasingly less important as an economic partner. And since the collapse of the Soviet Union, there is no serious military threat from Russia to Western Europe. Nevertheless, tens of thousands of American soldiers are still stationed in hundreds of US military bases and US nuclear weapons are stationed on German soil. If you look at the situation objectively from the US perspective, America is protecting Europe from the countries with which it has close trade relations. Europe's core interest, however, is to further expand its economic relations with the USA's biggest competitors. Don't be blinded by the politicians' rhetoric. Feelings, shared history, values, culture and traditions play no role at all in whether alliances really work. What matters is whether the interests coincide. And it turns out that the interests of Europe and the USA can no longer be reconciled today and this partnership will soon end.

As the other comment said. It's hyper exposure to mental health issues. Radio TV social media, schools etc it permeates to the children, vulnerable and with mallable brains. Mental illness is heretable, but more prominant, is the social contagion aspect. Children are now using therapy speech. Its gone viral. And viruses are CONTAGIOUS. Looking on social media. It seems everyone and their dog is now a psychotherapist. Which induces and propagates more ' viruses'. They even inventing more disorders. They spread the net to catch more vulnerable. It's a moneymaking machine. Have you ever noticed that nearly all of them have negative mental health backstories? Is it true, or is it just ingratiation to grease the wheels.

I worked in a CQC registered residential home for individuals with autism. Three in their forties, one in her fifties, all in robust physical health. I myself was older than all of them. I turned up for work throughout the whole of the so called ‘pandemic’, at that time taking everything that was told as gospel and as a result more than a little scared. I refused the vaccine in early 21 and witnessed my colleagues suffer unpleasant side effects throughout that summer. Constantly feeling fatigued, one lady with heart issues resulting in three months off work, colds in the height of summer, chest infections etc. I was then of course sacked in November 21 and the vaccine I was initially offered (Astra Zeneca) deemed unsafe and taken off of the market two years later. The episode was crime of huge proportion and no recompense has been offered to any staff who were sacked (they of course used us as test subjects and then didn’t dare go after NHS staff) I’ll never forgive these criminals what they did and are currently suppressing. Legitimised gangsters. The likes of Javid and Hancock won’t be returning after the election and will no doubt be taking up well paid corporate positions, having escaped being held to account. This is Britain and it stinks

"The Boiling Moat: Urgent Steps to Defend Taiwan" - July 1, 2024 by Matt Pottinger copied from Amazon The book argues that a robust military strategy is essential for countering Beijing’s aggression. Pottinger and his team map out a workable military strategy for Taiwan, the United States, Japan, Australia, and Europe to pursue collectively, urging quick adoption to avert a devastating war. The significance of Taiwan to the world economy, semiconductor supply, and Indo-Pacific security is underscored. The authors stress that preventing China’s coercive annexation of Taiwan requires democracies to demonstrate not just the means but also the will to effectively resist, conveying the message that a military attempt by Xi would likely lead to disastrous consequences, both for China and for the international community. Chinese leader Xi Jinping has openly expressed his intention to annex Taiwan to mainland China, even threatening the use of force. An invasion or blockade of Taiwan by Chinese forces would be catastrophic, with severe consequences for democracies worldwide. In The Boiling Moat, Matt Pottinger and a team of scholars and distinguished military and political leaders urgently outline practical steps for deterrence. The authors stress that preventing a war is more affordable than waging one and emphasize the importance of learning from recent failures in deterrence, such as Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

2022 UK Supreme Court President Lord Robert Reed said he and Lord Patrick Hodge were resigning from the court over the threat to civil freedoms posed by the new law. "The judges of the Supreme Court cannot continue to sit in Hong Kong without appearing to endorse an administration which has departed from values of political freedom, and freedom of expression," Lord Reed said. Senior British judges have sat on the court since 1997 as part of an agreement when Hong Kong was handed over to China by the UK The Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal hears many of the territory's highest profile cases, often ruling on key questions over civil and political liberties. The exodus of Hong Kongers and foreign city residents has reached such a level that even the city’s chief executive, who announced this week that she will not seek a second term, admits that Hong Kong is experiencing a brain drain. Her replacement will almost certainly be a former police officer who has been saddled with U.S. sanctions and who helped trigger the 2019 protests. His elevation would cement that, above all else, the authorities in Beijing view the issue of security as paramount, even at the cost of business interests, rapidly decreasing civil liberties, and professional accountability.

Most of the world's land is owned by very few. Land reform is needed to change that - to accomplish that would require a paradigm shift in landholding. Taking the UK as an example the legal notion that the area constituting the UK is ultimately allodially owned, as an incorporeal hereditament, by the monarch as feudal overlord would be replaced by the legal notion that all the UK area is the allodial corporeal hereditament of the nation. The UK would become a Nation-State. There would be no need for anyone to move, areas can be life-time leased from the nation [through the land registry or private business arrangement of which the land registry is informed]. The monarch’s technical ownership of the UK would be extinguished (the position of the monarch as a Head of State need not be affected) by an Act based on human rights legislation; as successfully employed against the Duke of Westminster in 1985. Incumbents, individual or corporate, would become life-time leaseholders (instead of a freeholder or leaseholder who holds tenure of land of the crown) of the areas they presently control. Freehold would be replaced by an alienable life-time lease - the lease-holder would be free to dispose of the lease through sale, gift or will, and to rent or sub-let. In order to pay ground rent of £10 p.a. to every UK national, as recognition of the nation’s superior ownership,. a charge of about £8/acre on landholders present holdings would be necessary. The Duke of Buccleugh would pay at least £2.28mn p.a., Duke of Athol £1.18mn p.a., Duchy of Cornwall £1.09mn p.a. and the Duchy of Lancaster about £0.38mn p.a. (if they retained exclusive use over all the land they presently lease or hold freehold title to). The average detached house would pay about £3 p.a., the average terraced house £1.5 p.a. Farm holdings in the UK range between 50 acres (£400p.a.) and over 250acres (£2000 p.a. or over). Owners of flats in multi-occupancy buildings would pay their (much reduced) proportion of ground rent on the land occupied by the building and hard standing (£80/acre) and any open ground (£8/acre) surrounding it, if the public were excluded - all holders contribution being determined by the area held, not its value. [considered critique welcomed]

I think it goes deeper than social media. It is the attention economy itself. It should never have been legal in the first place to sell the data of a user to advertisers. Every issue stems from that in my opinion. With fierce competition, in order to be a “successful” app you must lock the user into an addiction cycle that exploits inherent weaknesses in our brains to keep us engaged and harvest our data. I shudder to think what powerful AI will do down the line to keep us engaged when we’re already slaves to “dumb” algorithms. On a side note, something I find very sinister about the online gaming aspect is that modern games don’t seem to allow multiple children to play together in front of the same screen. They need to go home to separate houses in order to play together.
